On the 25th Anniversary of His Election to the Ecumenical Throne

We offer praise and glory to the Triune God, who deemed us worthy to reach the twenty-fifth anniversary since the day when, by the mandate of our Holy and Sacred Synod, we ascended the martyred Apostolic Throne of the Church of Constantinople. With God's grace, having gladly run this long course of service in the First-Throne among the Orthodox Churches, we look back the experiences, events, prayers, journeys and activities, while at the same time looking forward with a spirit of optimism and steadfast hope to the future, even as today we exclaim the words of our saintly predecessor, St. John Chrysostom: "Glory be to God for all things."

We express our wholehearted gratitude to all those who contributed in our endeavor to lift the cross of the Patriarchal office, which the Holy and Great Church of Christ placed on our shoulders upon our election, while also entrusting us with the anxiety and hope of our pious Orthodox people, both within the Ecumenical Throne and the entire Orthodox Church.

Throughout our Patriarchal tenure, many people contributed, like other Cyrenaeans, to lightening the weight and often softening the pain and labor of the journey. We recall with thanks the words and deeds of brother clergy and laity of the courageous and sacrificial Mother Church, both close and afar, who offered their time and toil in support over these past twenty-five years. Our pastoral visitations to the Eparchies of the most sacred Ecumenical Throne and our communications with our faithful throughout the world, but also with the honorable Authorities in various countries, comprised a unique occasion for sincere dialogue, personal relations, and fellowship.

This journey would not have had the desired result without the love and support of our Brother Primates of the other Orthodox Autocephalous Churches. This fraternal support of Their Beatitudes the Primates, whom we wholeheartedly thank, as well as expression of respect on the part of the holy clergy, esteemed authorities, and people of good will -- from the southernmost tip of Africa to Siberia, and from the Far East to the end of Europe -- proved inspiring and undiminished. The many visits to the Phanar by clergy and laity from other Orthodox Churches bears witness to this fact, which also underlines and reinforces our unshakeable spiritual bonds and the unwavering unity of the Church.

We fondly remember the magnanimous hospitality extended to us by our brother Primates and Hierarchs. We call to mind the pious faithful that welcomed us with emotional tears and diverse expressions of unfeigned love. And we cannot forget the devout monks and nuns, who frequently received us and constantly pray for us as well as the Church of Christ's poor.

Our Orthodox Church is One, and its head is our Lord Jesus Christ, who deemed us worthy to convene -- with the consent of all Their Beatitudes the Primates -- the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church recently held in Crete. This great historical event of our Holy Church fills us with immense joy and enables us to take pride in the Lord, for it constitutes the culmination of our Patriarchal tenure. The Holy and Great Council demonstrated the conciliar identity of the Orthodox Church and it is the obligation of us all -- both those who attended and those who were prevented from attending -- to receive and apply the Decisions of this Council, as well as to transmit and cultivate the spirit of unity to our pious Orthodox faithful throughout the world.

Acknowledging the demands of our time, we continued and enhanced the Theological Dialogue with the rest of the Christian world, along with the academic dialogue with other religious communities. We recognize with gratitude and appreciate the labors and great contribution of those who participated and continue to participate in all of these dialogues, where the credible witness of our Orthodox Faith has been and continues to be offered.

The ongoing plague of war and terrorism all over the planet has never ceased to be of concern to us. The wave of violence that affects many regions of the world has resulted in the annihilation of peoples and the persecution of our Christian brothers and sisters in the Middle East. We especially pray for those Christians who have been martyred and address our appeal to all concerned for the cessation of hostility and criminal activity.

Our most holy Church prays for the peace of the whole world and considers the respect of human dignity and freedom as the foundational and indelible right of every person. There is no "sacred" war. Only peace is sacred, and it is the supreme obligation of all.

With afflicted heart and profound pain, we follow the tragedy of those who have been violently uprooted from their places of origin, who are hopeful for a better future and a new homeland. Our recent visit to the refugee welcome center on the island of Lesvos, together with His Holiness Pope Francis and his Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, resulted in a common effort to sensitize global opinion on our suffering fellow human beings.

The world is today experiencing a vast financial and social crisis. The phenomenon of globalization arouses great turmoil in international economy and disturbs social cohesion, widening the gap between poor and rich. The principle of autonomy in economy, which separates the economy from human need, results in profiteering and exploitation. We are, therefore, opposed to any financial activity as an end in itself and propose an "economy with a human face," an economy adhering to the gospel principles of justice and solidarity.

From the outset of our Patriarchal ministry, we have been profoundly concerned with advancing the preservation of the natural environment. We are stewards and protectors of God's creation, and it is our sacred duty to respect and transmit this divine gift to future generations unharmed and complete. The spiritual and ethical crisis of humanity, the abuse of human freedom, have led to the rupture in human relations with creation as well as to a distortion in its proper use. Today we not only abuse the natural resources of our planet and pollute only the natural environment, but we have expanded our pollution beyond our planet to space, since in recent years the volume of so-called "space debris" has increased dramatically and there is even talk of exploiting resources of other celestial entities. The only solution is a radical change of mindset, the reversal from an acquisitive and consumerist attitude to a eucharistic and ascetic approach to creation, along with a spiritual education of young people in order for them to treat the environment with sensitivity, respect, and responsibility.

We offer praise and thanks, in humility and prayer, to God in the highest, for the completion of twenty-five years at the rudder of the First-Throne Church of Orthodoxy, and we address all of you, honorable brothers and beloved children in the Lord, as we ask for your prayers and wishes to "the great God and Savior Jesus Christ" (cf. Titus 2.13) to strengthen us for a continued fruitful service for the glory of His honorable name "that is above all names." (Phil. 2.9)

Tributamos alabanza y gloria al Dios Uno y Trino, que nos ha considerado dignos de alcanzar el vigesimoquinto aniversario del día en que, por mandato de nuestro Santo y Sacro Sínodo, ascendimos al martirizado Trono Patriarcal de la Iglesia de Constantinopla. Con la gracia de Dios, habiendo recorrido alegremente este camino de servicio en el Primer Trono entre las Iglesias Ortodoxas, echamos la mirada atrás a las experiencias, acontecimientos, oraciones, viajes y actividades, y al mismo tiempo miramos hacia adelante con un espíritu de optimismo y firme esperanza en el futuro, por lo cual exclamamos como nuestro santo predecesor Juan Crisóstomo: "Gloria a Dios por todas las cosas".

Expresamos nuestra más sincera gratitud a todos los que han contribuido a nuestro esfuerzo de llevar la cruz del cargo patriarcal que la Santa y Gran Iglesia de Cristo colocó sobre nuestros hombros el día de nuestra elección, y hacemos nuestros los anhelos y esperanzas de nuestro piadoso pueblo ortodoxo, tanto del Patriarcado Ecuménico como de toda la Iglesia Ortodoxa.

A lo largo de nuestro patriarcado, mucha gente ha contribuido, a modo de otros cireneos, a aliviar el peso y a suavizar a menudo el dolor y penalidades del camino. Recordamos con agradecimiento las palabras y hechos de nuestros hermanos clérigos y laicos de la valiente y sacrificada Madre Iglesia, tanto los que están lejos como los que están cerca, que han ofrecido su tiempo y dedicación a apoyarnos a lo largo de estos veinticinco años. Nuestras visitas pastorales a las eparquías del sacratísimo Trono Ecuménico y nuestras comunicaciones con nuestros fieles de todo el mundo, así como con las honorables autoridades de los diferentes países, han supuesto una ocasión única para el diálogo sincero y el establecimiento de relaciones personales y de hermandad.

Este viaje no habría tenido el resultado deseado sin el amor y apoyo de nuestros Hermanos Primados de las demás Iglesias Ortodoxas Autocéfalas. Este apoyo fraternal de Sus Beatitudes los Primados, a quienes damos las gracias de todo corazón, así como las muestras de respeto por parte del santo clero, las estimadas autoridades y las personas de buena voluntad, desde el punto más meridional de África hasta Siberia y desde el Lejano Oriente hasta los confines de Europa, han demostrado ser fuente de continua inspiración. Las muchas visitas al Fanar por parte del clero y el laicado de otras Iglesias Ortodoxas dan testimonio de este hecho, que también subraya y refuerza nuestros inquebrantables lazos espirituales y la firme unidad de la Iglesia.

Recordamos con cariño la magnánima hospitalidad ofrecida por nuestros Hermanos Primados y Jerarcas. Traemos a la mente a los piadosos fieles que nos dieron la bienvenida con emocionadas lágrimas y diversas expresiones de amor sin fingimiento. Y no podemos olvidar a los devotos monjes y monjas que frecuentemente nos recibieron y constantemente rezan por nosotros y por los pobres de la Iglesia de Cristo.

Nuestra Iglesia Ortodoxa es Una, y su cabeza es nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que nos ha considerado dignos de convocar -con el consentimiento de Sus Beatitudes los Primados- el Santo y Gran Concilio de la Iglesia Ortodoxa, recientemente celebrado en Creta. Este gran acontecimiento histórico de nuestra Santa Iglesia nos llena de inmenso gozo y nos permite enorgullecernos en el Señor, pues constituye la culminación de nuestro patriarcado. El Santo y Gran Concilio demostró la identidad conciliar de la Iglesia Ortodoxa, y es obligación de todos nosotros -tanto los que asitimos como los que no pudieron hacerlo- recibir y aplicar las Decisiones de este Concilio, así como transmitir y cultivar el espíritu de unidad a nuestros piadosos fieles de todo el mundo.

Reconociendo las exigencias de nuestro tiempo, hemos continuado y avanzado en el Diálogo Teológico con el resto del mundo cristiano, así como en el diálogo académico con otras comunidades religiosas. Reconocemos con gratitud y apreciamos la labor y la gran contribución de los que han participado y siguen haciéndolo en todos estos diálogos, donde se ha ofrecido y sigue ofreciéndose el testimonio creíble de nuestra Fe Ortodoxa.

La plaga de la guerra y el terrorismo en todo el planeta nunca ha dejado de preocuparnos. La ola de violencia que afecta a muchas regiones del mundo ha causado la aniquilación de pueblos y la persecución de nuestros hermanos y hermanas cristianos en el Oriente Próximo. Rezamos especialmente por los cristianos que han sido martirizados, y lanzamos una llamada a todas las partes implicadas para que cesen las hostilidades y la actividad criminal.

Nuestra santísima Iglesia reza por la paz de todo el mundo y considera el respeto a la dignidad humana y a la libertad un derecho inalienable de toda persona. No existen guerras "sagradas". Solo la paz es sagrada, y constituye una obligación suprema para todos.

Con un corazón afligido y profundo dolor seguimos la tragedia de todos los que han sido desarraigados con violencia de sus lugares de origen y esperan un futuro mejor y un nuevo hogar. Nuestra reciente visita al centro de acogida de refugiados en la isla de Lesbos, junto a Su Santidad el Papa Francisco y Su Beatitud el Arzobispo Jerónimo de Atenas, ha supuesto un esfuerzo conjunto para sensibilizar a la opinión pública mundial acerca de nuestros semejantes que sufren.

El mundo de hoy experimenta una vasta crisis financiera y social. El fenómeno de la globalización causa gran revuelo en la economía internacional y desestabiliza la cohesión social, ensanchando la brecha entre pobres y ricos. El principio de autonomía de la economía, que separa a esta de las necesidades humanas, provoca aprovechamiento y explotación. Por tanto, nos oponemos a cualquier actividad financiera como un fin en sí misma y proponemos una "economía con rostro humano", una economía que se adhiera a los principio evangélicos de justicia y solidaridad.

Desde el principio de nuestro patriarcado, hemos estado profundamente preocupados con la conservación del medio ambiente. Somos mayordomos y protectores de la creación de Dios, y es nuestro deber sagrado respetar y transmitir intacto e íntegro este don divino a las futuras generaciones. La crisis espiritual y ética de la humanidad, el abuso de la libertad humana, han conducido a la ruptura en las relaciones humanas con la creación y a una distorsión de su recto uso. En nuestros días no solo abusamos de los recursos naturales de nuestro planeta y contaminamos el medio ambiente, sino que hemos ampliado nuestra contaminación más allá del planeta, al espacio, pues en los últimos años el volumen de los llamados "residuos espaciales" ha aumentado dramáticamente, e incluso se habla de explotar los recursos de otros cuerpos celestes. La única solución es un cambio radical de mentalidad, el paso de una actitud vital consumista y centrada en la acumulación a un trato eucarístico de la creación, junto a una educación espiritual de los jóvenes para que traten el medio ambiente con sensatez, respecto y responsabilidad.

Tributamos alabanza y agradecimiento, en humilde oración, a Dios en las alturas, por el cumplimiento de estos venticinco años en el timón del Primer Trono de la Ortodoxia, y nos dirigimos a todos vosotros, honorables hermanos y queridos hijos en el Señor, pidiéndoos vuestras oraciones y vuestro continuado y fructífero servicio para la gloria de Su Honorable nombre, "que está por encima de todo nombre" (Fil 2,9).

Αἶνον καὶ δοξολογίαν ἀναπέμπομεν πρὸς τὸν ἐν Τριάδι Θεόν, καθότι ἠξίωσεν ἡμᾶς νὰ φθάσωμεν εἰς τὴν συμπλήρωσιν εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας, καθ᾿ ἣν ἀνήλθομεν, κατὰ τὸ ἐπίταγμα τῆς Ἁγίας καὶ Ἱερᾶς Ἐνδημούσης Συνόδου, εἰς τὸν μαρτυρικὸν Ἀποστολικὸν Θρόνον τῆς Κωνσταντινουπολίτιδος Ἐκκλησίας. Χάριτι Θεοῦ διελθόντες αἰσίως τὴν μακρὰν αὐτὴν περίοδον διακονίας τῆς Πρωτοθρόνου Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας, ἀναμιμνησκόμεθα μὲν τὰ βιώματα, τὰς ἐμπειρίας, τὰς προσευχάς, τὰς πορείας καὶ τὰς δράσεις, ἀτενίζομεν δὲ ἐν ταὐτῷ μὲ αἰσιοδοξίαν καὶ ἐλπίδα κραταιὰν τὸ μέλλον, καὶ ἀναφωνοῦμεν σήμερον τὸ «Δόξα τῷ Θεῷ πάντων ἕνεκεν», τοῦ ἐν Ἁγίοις Προκατόχου ἡμῶν Ἰωάννου, τοῦ τὴν γλῶτταν Χρυσορρήμονος.

Εὐχαριστοῦμεν ἐκ βάθους καρδίας ὅλους τοὺς συντελέσαντας εἰς τὴν προσπάθειαν τῆς ἡμετέρας Μετριότητος, νὰ ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν τοῦ Πατριαρχικοῦ ἀξιώματος, τὸν ὁποῖον ἡ Ἁγία τοῦ Χριστοῦ Μεγάλη Ἐκκλησία ἔθηκεν εἰς τοὺς ὤμους ἡμῶν ἅμα τῇ ἡμετέρᾳ ἐκλογῇ, ἐπιθέσασα ἐν ταὐτῷ τὴν ἀγωνίαν καὶ τὴν ἐλπίδα τοῦ εὐσεβοῦς Γένους τῶν Ὀρθοδόξων, τόσον τοῦ Οἰκουμενικοῦ Θρόνου, ὅσον καὶ συμπάσης τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας.

Κατὰ τὸ διάστημα τῆς Πατριαρχικῆς ἡμῶν διακονίας, πολλοὶ συνέβαλον ὡς ἄλλοι Κυρηναῖοι, διὰ νὰ ἐλαφρύνουν τὸ βάρος καὶ νὰ ἁπαλύνουν πολλάκις τοὺς πόνους καὶ τὸν κάματον τῆς πορείας. Ἐνθυμούμεθα μὲ εὐγνωμοσύνην τοὺς λόγους καὶ τὰ ἔργα τῶν ἀδελφῶν κληρικῶν καὶ λαϊκῶν τῆς γενναιομάρτυρος Μητρὸς Ἐκκλησίας, τῶν ἐγγὺς καὶ τῶν μακράν, οἱ ὁποῖοι δὲν ἐφείσθησαν χρόνου καὶ κόπου, πρὸς στήριξιν ἡμῶν εἰς τὴν εἰκοσιπενταετῆ δολιχοδρομίαν. Αἱ ποιμαντικαὶ ἐπισκέψεις τῆς ἡμετέρας Μετριότητος εἰς τὰς ἀνὰ τὴν ὑφήλιον Ἐπαρχίας τοῦ Πανιέρου Οἰκουμενικοῦ Θρόνου καὶ ἡ ἐπικοινωνία μετὰ τοῦ χριστεπωνύμου πληρώματος, καθὼς καὶ μετὰ τῶν ἐντίμων Ἀρχῶν τῶν διαφόρων Χωρῶν, ἀπετέλεσε δι᾿ ἡμᾶς μοναδικὴν εὐκαιρίαν εἰλικρινοῦς διαλόγου, διαπροσωπικῶν σχέσεων καὶ συμπνευματισμοῦ.

Ἡ πορεία αὕτη δὲν θὰ εἶχε τὸ ποθούμενον ἀποτέλεσμα, ἄνευ τῆς ἀγάπης καὶ τῆς συμπαραστάσεως τῶν Ἀδελφῶν Προκαθημένων τῶν λοιπῶν Ὀρθοδόξων Αὐτοκεφάλων Ἐκκλησιῶν. Ἡ φιλάδελφος αὕτη στήριξις τῶν Μακαριωτάτων Προκαθημένων, τοὺς ὁποίους καὶ εὐχαριστοῦμεν ἐγκαρδίως, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ ἔκφρασις σεβασμοῦ ἐκ μέρους τοῦ Ἱεροῦ κλήρου, τῶν Ἀρχῶν καὶ τοῦ φιλογενοῦς λαοῦ, ἀπὸ τὸ νοτιώτερον ἄκρον τῆς Ἀφρικῆς ἕως τὴν Σιβηρίαν, καὶ ἀπὸ τὴν Ἄπω Ἀνατολὴν ἕως τὰ πέρατα τῆς Δύσεως, ὑπῆρξε συγκινητικὴ καὶ ἀμείωτος. Τοῦτο μαρτυροῦν, ἐπίσης, αἱ ἐπισκέψεις εἰς Φανάριον τῶν κληρικῶν καὶ λαϊκῶν τῶν ἄλλων Ὀρθοδόξων Ἐκκλησιῶν, γεγονὸς τὸ ὁποῖον τονίζει καὶ ἐνδυναμώνει τοὺς ἀρρήκτους πνευματικοὺς ἡμῶν δεσμοὺς καὶ τὴν ἀκλόνητον ἑνότητα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας.

Ἐνθυμούμεθα μὲ συγκίνησιν τὴν ἀβραμιαίαν φιλοξενίαν, τῆς ὁποίας ἐτύχομεν ὑπὸ ἀδελφῶν Προκαθημένων καὶ Ἱεραρχῶν. Ἐνθυμούμεθα τὸν εὐσεβῆ λαόν, ὁ ὁποῖος ὑπεδέχθη ἡμᾶς μετὰ δακρύων συγκινήσεως καὶ ποικίλων ἐκδηλώσεων ἀνυποκρίτου ἀγάπης. Δὲν λησμονοῦμεν τοὺς εὐλαβεῖς μοναχοὺς καὶ μοναχάς, οἱ ὁποῖοι πολλάκις ἐφιλοξένησαν ἡμᾶς καὶ ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχονται διὰ τὴν ἡμετέραν Μετριότητα καὶ τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν τῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ πενήτων.

Ἡ Ὀρθόδοξος ἡμῶν Ἐκκλησία εἶναι Μία, κεφαλὴν ἔχουσα τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, τὸν ἀξιώσαντα ἡμᾶς νὰ συγκαλέσωμεν, συμφρονούντων καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν Μακαριωτάτων Προκαθημένων, τὴν προσφάτως πραγματοποιηθεῖσαν ἐν Κρήτῃ Ἁγίαν καὶ Μεγάλην Σύνοδον τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας. Τὸ μεῖζον τοῦτο ἱστορικὸν γεγονὸς τῆς Ἁγίας ἡμῶν Ἐκκλησίας πληροῖ ἡμᾶς χαρᾶς μεγίστης καὶ δυνάμεθα νὰ καυχηθῶμεν ἐν Κυρίῳ, ὅτι τοῦτο ἀποτελεῖ τὸ ἀποκορύφωμα τῆς ἡμετέρας Πατριαρχίας. Ἡ Ἁγία καὶ Μεγάλη Σύνοδος ἀνέδειξε τὴν συνοδικὴν ταυτότητα τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας καὶ εἶναι χρέος πάντων ἡμῶν, τόσον τῶν συμμετασχόντων, ὅσον καὶ τῶν κωλυθέντων ὅπως παραστοῦν, ἡ ἀποδοχὴ καὶ ἡ ἐφαρμογὴ τῶν Ἀποφάσεων τῆς Συνόδου, ὡς καὶ ἡ μεταλαμπάδευσις καὶ ἡ καλλιέργεια τοῦ πνεύματος ἑνότητος εἰς τὸ εὐσεβὲς Ὀρθόδοξον ποίμνιον ἁπανταχοῦ τῆς Οἰκουμένης.

Ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι τὰς ἀπαιτήσεις τῶν καιρῶν, ἐσυνεχίσαμεν καὶ ἐνεθαρρύναμεν τὸν Θεολογικὸν Διάλογον μετὰ τοῦ λοιποῦ Χριστιανικοῦ κόσμου, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸν Ἀκαδημαϊκὸν διάλογον μετὰ τῶν ἄλλων Θρησκειῶν. Μνημονεύομεν εὐγνωμόνως καὶ ἀναγνωρίζομεν τοὺς κόπους καὶ τὴν μεγάλην προσφορὰν τῶν συμμετασχόντων καὶ συμμετεχόντων εἰς ὅλους αὐτοὺς τοὺς διαλόγους, ὅπου ἐδόθη καὶ δίδεται μετὰ παρρησίας ἡ ἀξιόπιστος μαρτυρία τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Πίστεως.

Ἡ συνεχιζομένη μάστιξ τοῦ πολέμου καὶ τῆς τρομοκρατίας ἀνὰ τὴν ὑφήλιον δὲν ἔπαυσε νὰ ἀπασχολῇ τὴν ἡμετέραν Μετριότητα. Τὸ κῦμα βίας, τὸ ὁποῖον πλήττει πολλὰς περιοχὰς τοῦ κόσμου, ἔφερεν ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα τὴν ἐξουθένωσιν τῶν λαῶν καὶ τὸν διωγμὸν τῶν ἀδελφῶν Χριστιανῶν τῆς Μέσης Ἀνατολῆς. Προσευχόμεθα διὰ τοὺς μαρτυρήσαντας Χριστιανοὺς καὶ ἀπευθύνομεν ἔκκλησιν πρὸς κάθε ἐμπλεκόμενον διὰ τὴν παῦσιν τῶν ἐχθροπραξιῶν καὶ τῶν ἐγκληματικῶν ἐνεργειῶν.

Ἡ Ἁγιωτάτη ἡμῶν Ἐκκλησία προσεύχεται ὑπὲρ τῆς εἰρήνης τοῦ σύμπαντος κόσμου καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν σεβασμὸν τῆς προσωπικότητος καὶ τῆς ἀτομικῆς ἐλευθερίας θεμελιῶδες καὶ ἀπαράγραπτον δικαίωμα τοῦ κάθε ἀνθρώπου. Δὲν ὑπάρχει «ἱερὸς» πόλεμος. Μόνον ἡ εἰρήνη εἶναι ἱερὰ καὶ κοινὸν ὑπέρτατον καθῆκον.

Μὲ ἀγωνίαν καὶ βαθύτατον πόνον, παρακολουθοῦμεν τὸ δρᾶμα τῶν βιαίως ἐκδιωχθέντων ἀπὸ τὰς πατρογονικὰς αὐτῶν ἑστίας προσφύγων, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἐλπίζουν εἰς ἕνα καλύτερον κόσμον καὶ μίαν νέαν πατρίδα. Ἡ πρόσφατος ἐπίσκεψις ἡμῶν εἰς τὸ κέντρον ὑποδοχῆς προσφύγων εἰς Λέσβον, μετὰ τοῦ Ἁγιωτάτου Πάπα Φραγκίσκου καὶ τοῦ Μακαριωτάτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Ἀθηνῶν Ἱερωνύμου, ἀπετέλε-σε μίαν κοινὴν προσπάθειαν εὐαισθητοποιήσεως τῆς παγκοσμίου κοινῆς γνώμης διὰ τὸν πάσχοντα συνάνθρωπον.

Ὁ κόσμος σήμερον διέρχεται μίαν μεγάλην οἰκονομικὴν καὶ κοινωνικὴν κρίσιν. Τὸ φαινόμενον τῆς παγκοσμιοποιήσεως προκαλεῖ ἰσχυροὺς κλυδωνισμοὺς εἰς τὴν παγκόσμιον οἰκονομίαν καὶ διαταράσσει τὴν κοινωνικὴν συνοχήν, διευρῦνον τὸ χάσμα μεταξὺ πτωχῶν καὶ πλουσίων. Ἡ ἀρχὴ τῆς ἰδιονομίας τῆς οἰκονομίας, ἡ ὁποία αὐτονομεῖ τὴν οἰκονομίαν ἀπὸ τὰς ἀνθρωπίνας ἀνάγκας, φέρει ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα τὴν κερδοσκοπίαν καὶ τὴν ἐκμετάλλευσιν. Ἡμεῖς ἀντιτιθέμεθα εἰς τὴν οἰκονομικὴν δραστηριότητα ὡς αὐτοσκοπὸν καὶ προτείνομεν μίαν «οἰκονομίαν μὲ ἀνθρώπινον πρόσωπον», διεπομένην ὑπὸ τῶν εὐαγγελικῶν ἀρχῶν τῆς δικαιοσύνης καὶ τῆς ἀλληλεγγύης.

Ἀπὸ τῆς ἐνάρξεως τῆς Πατριαρχικῆς ἡμῶν διακονίας, ἠσχολήθημεν ἐνδελεχῶς μὲ τὴν προώθησιν τῆς προστασίας τοῦ φυσικοῦ περιβάλλοντος. Εἴμεθα οἰκονόμοι καὶ προστάται τῆς δημιουργίας τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἔχομεν ἱερὸν χρέος νὰ σεβώμεθα καὶ νὰ παραδίδωμεν τὸ θεόσδοτον αὐτὸ δῶρον ἀκέραιον καὶ ἀλώβητον εἰς τὰς ἐπερχόμενας γενεάς. Ἡ πνευματικὴ καὶ ἠθικὴ κρίσις τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, ἡ κατάχρησις τῆς ἐλευθερίας του, ὡδήγησαν εἰς τὴν ρῆξιν τῆς σχέσεως αὐτοῦ μὲ τὴν κτίσιν καὶ εἰς τὴν διαστρέβλωσιν τῆς ὀρθῆς χρήσεως αὐτῆς. Σήμερον, δὲν ἐκμεταλλευόμεθα μόνον τοὺς φυσικοὺς πόρους τοῦ πλανήτου μας, δὲν μολύνομεν μόνον τὸ φυσικὸν περιβάλλον, ἀλλὰ ἐπεξετείναμε τὴν μόλυνσιν καὶ εἰς τὸ διάστημα, ἐφόσον τὰ τελευταῖα ἔτη αὐξάνει ραγδαίως ὁ ὄγκος τῶν λεγομένων "διαστημικῶν σκουπιδιῶν" καὶ γίνεται λόγος ἀκόμη καὶ διὰ τὴν ἐκμετάλλευσιν πόρων ἄλλων οὐρανίων σωμάτων. Μόνη λύσις εἶναι ἡ ριζικὴ ἀλλαγὴ νοοτροπίας, ἡ μετάβασις ἀπὸ τὴν κτητικὴν καὶ καταναλωτικὴν στάσιν εἰς τὴν εὐχαριστιακὴν καὶ ἀσκητικὴν χρῆσιν τῆς δημιουργίας, καὶ ἡ ἐν τῷ πνεύματι αὐτῷ διαπαιδαγώγησις τῶν νέων, ὥστε νὰ ἀντιμετωπίζουν τὸ περιβάλλον μὲ εὐαισθησίαν, σεβασμὸν καὶ ὑπεθυνότητα.

Ὑμνοῦμεν καὶ εὐχαριστοῦμεν, ἐν ταπεινώσει καὶ παρακλήσει, τὸν ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεόν, ἐπὶ τῇ συμπληρώσει εἰκοσιπενταετίας ὅλης εἰς τὸ Πηδάλιον τῆς Πρωτοθρόνου Ἐκκλησίας τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας, καὶ ἀπευθυνόμενοι πρὸς πάντας ὑμᾶς, τιμιώτατοι ἀδελφοὶ καὶ τέκνα ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀγαπητά, ἐξαιτούμεθα τὰς δεήσεις καὶ τὰς εὐχάς σας πρὸς «τὸν μέγαν Θεὸν καὶ Σωτῆρα ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν» (πρβλ. Τίτ. 2, 13), νὰ ἐνδυναμώνῃ ἡμᾶς πρὸς καρποφόρον συνέχισιν τοῦ ἔργου διακονίας, εἰς δόξαν τοῦ «ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα» (Φιλ. 2, 9) τιμωμένου ὀνόματος Αὐτοῦ.

Rendiamo lode e glorificazione al Dio Trino, che ci ha reso degni di giungere al compimento dei venticinque anni dal giorno in cui siamo saliti, per disposizione del Santo e Sacro Sinodo presente in città, sul Trono Apostolico e martire della Chiesa Costantinopolitana. Per Grazia di Dio avendo attraversato felicemente questo lungo periodo di servizio del Primo Trono della Chiesa Ortodossa, ci ricordiamo da una parte i passi, le esperienze, le preghiere, i progressi e le azioni, e dall’altra gioiamo per questo con ottimismo e speranza possente nel futuro e esclamiamo oggi il “Gloria a Dio per ogni cosa” del nostro Santo Predecessore Giovanni, Colui che aveva la lingua fluente come l’oro (Crisostomo).

            Ringraziamo dal profondo del cuore tutti coloro che hanno contribuito nello sforzo della nostra Modestia, a portare la croce della dignità Patriarcale, che la Santa e Grande Chiesa di Cristo ha posto sulle nostre spalle con la nostra elezione, avendo aggiunto a ciò la angoscia e la speranza della pia Stirpe degli Ortodossi, tanto del Patriarcato Ecumenico quanto dell’intera Chiesa Ortodossa.

            Durante il tempo del nostro servizio Patriarcale, tanti hanno contribuito come altri Cirenei per alleggerire il peso e per lenire spesso le pene e la fatica dell’andare avanti. Rammentiamo con riconoscenza le parole e le opere dei fratelli, chierici e laici della Madre Chiesa martire coraggiosa, dei vicini e dei lontani, i quali non sono stati fermati da tempo e fatica per supportarci nel venticinquennale lungo percorso. Le visite pastorali della nostra Modesta alle Eparchie del Sacro Trono Ecumenico sparse per il mondo e il contatto con i fedeli che portano il nome di Cristo, così come con le stimate Autorità dei diversi Paesi, ha costituito per noi una occasione unica di reale dialogo, di relazioni interpersonali e di spiritualità insieme.

            Questo progresso non avrebbe il risultato desiderato, senza l’amore e la compartecipazione dei Fratelli Primati delle restanti Chiese Ortodosse Autocefale. Questo fraterno supporto dei Beatissimi Primati, che ringraziamo di cuore, ma anche la dimostrazione di rispetto da parte del Sacro Clero, della Autorità e del nobile popolo, dalla punta più estrema dell’Africa fino alla Siberia, e dall’Estremo Oriente fino ai confini dell’Occidente, è stato toccante e illimitato. Testimonianza di ciò sono inoltre le visite al Fanar dei chierici e dei laici delle altre Chiese Ortodosse, fatto che accentua e rinvigorisce i nostri legami spirituali inestricabili e la incrollabile unità della Chiesa.

            Rammentiamo con commozione la ospitalità abramitica che abbiamo beneficiato dai nostri fratelli Primati e dai Vescovi. Rammentiamo il pio popolo che ci ha dato il benvenuto con lacrime di commozione e con varie manifestazioni di amore schietto. Non dimentichiamo i devoti monaci e monache, i quali spesso ci hanno ospitato e che pregano incessantemente per la nostra Modestia e per la Chiesa dei poveri di Cristo.

            La Chiesa Ortodossa è Una, ha come capo il Signore nostro Gesù Cristo, che ci ha reso degni di convocare, col parere concorde degli altri Beatissimi Primati, a Creta il Santo e Grande Sinodo della Chiesa Ortodossa, tenutosi recentemente. Questo grandissimo fatto storico della nostra Santa Chiesa, ci riempie di grandissima gioia e possiamo vantarci nel Signore, poiché questo costituisce il momento culminante del nostro Patriarcato. Il Santo e Grande Sinodo ha dimostrato la identità sinodale della Chiesa Ortodossa ed è un dovere di tutti noi, sia di coloro che hanno partecipato, sia di coloro che sono stati impossibilitati dall’essere presenti, la accettazione e la applicazione delle Decisioni del Sinodo, come anche la diffusione e la coltivazione dello spirito di unità nel pio gregge Ortodosso ovunque nel mondo.

            Comprendendo le esigenze dei tempi, abbiamo continuato e incoraggiato il Dialogo Teologico con il restante Mondo Cristiano, ma anche il Dialogo Accademico con le altre Religioni. Commemoriamo con riconoscenza e riconosciamo le fatiche ed il grande contributo di coloro che hanno preso parte e di coloro che prendono parte in tutti questi dialoghi, dove è stata data e viene data con franchezza la testimonianza seria della Fede Ortodossa.

            Il continuo flagello della guerra e del terrorismo attraverso il pianeta non ha cessato di occupare la nostra Modestia. L’onda di violenza, che colpisce molte regioni del mondo, ha portato come risultato la umiliazione dei popoli e le persecuzioni dei fratelli Cristiani in Medio Oriente. Preghiamo per i Cristiani martirizzati e rivolgiamo un appello ad ognuno che è coinvolto, di far cessare le ostilità e le azioni criminali.

            La nostra Santissima Chiesa prega per la pace del mondo intero e considera il rispetto della persona e della libertà individuale, fondamentale e inalienabile diritto di ogni essere umano. Non esiste una guerra “santa”. Solo la pace è sacra e fine ultimo comune.

            Con angoscia e dolore profondissimo seguiamo il dramma dei profughi che vengono espulsi con violenza dai loro focolari domestici, e che sperano in un mondo migliore ed in una nuova patria. La nostra recente visita al centro di accoglienza dei profughi di Lesbo, con Sua Santità il Papa Francesco e Sua Beatitudine l’Arcivescovo di Atene Ieronimos, ha costituito un comune sforzo di consapevolezza della opinione comune mondiale sul prossimo che soffre.

            Il mondo oggi attraversa una grande crisi economica e sociale. Il fenomeno della globalizzazione causa gravi sconvolgimenti alla economia mondiale e sconvolge la coesione sociale, allargando il divario tra poveri e ricchi. Il principio di autolegiferazione dell’economia, che autonomizza l’economia dalle necessità umane, porta come risultato la speculazione e lo sfruttamento. Noi ci opponiamo alla attività economica come fine a se stessa, e suggeriamo una “economia dal volto umano”, guidata dai principi evangelici della giustizia e della solidarietà.

            Dall’inizio della nostro servizio Patriarcale, ci siamo occupati a fondo per la promozione della protezione dell’ambiente naturale. Siano economi e protettori della creazione di Dio e abbiamo un dovere sacro di rispettare e rendere questo dono datoci da Dio, integro e indenne alle generazioni che verranno. La crisi spirituale ed etica dell’uomo, l’abuso della sua libertà, hanno condotto alla rottura della sua relazione col creato e al travisamento del suo corretto uso. Oggi non sfruttiamo solo le risorse naturali del nostro pianeta, non solo contaminiamo l’ambiente naturale, ma abbiamo esteso la contaminazione anche allo spazio, in quanto negli ultimi anni aumenta rapidamente il volume dei cosiddetti “rifiuti spaziali” e si fa parola ancora anche per lo sfruttamento delle risorse di altri corpi celesti. Unica soluzione è il cambiamento radicale di mentalità, la transizione da uno stato possessivo e consumistico ad un uso eucaristico ed ascetico della creazione e la educazione con questo spirito dei giovani per affrontare l’ambiente con sensibilità, rispetto e responsabilità.

            Inneggiamo e ringraziamo, con umiltà e supplica, il Dio eccelso, nel compimento degli interi venticinque anni al Timone della Chiesa  Primaziale dell’Ortodossia, e rivolti verso tutti voi, venerabili fratelli e figli amati nel Signore, domandiamo le suppliche e le vostre preghiere verso “il grande Dio e Salvatore nostro Gesù Cristo” (cfr. Tit. 2,13) per rafforzarci  nella fruttuosa continuazione del opera di servizio, a gloria del Suo onorato Nome, “che è al di sopra di ogni Nome” (Fil. 2,9).
