METROPOLITAN EPIFANIY: EDUCATION HAS ALWAYS BELONGED TO THE CATEGORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPIRIT, AND FROM SPIRITUALITY IT TAKES ITS ROOTS

On the eve of Day of Knowledge, Metropolitan Epifaniy addressed teachers, university students, and schoolchildren with his spiritual advice.

“It’s a certain shame that both schools and universities are now perceived more as a tool for obtaining a diploma to confirm knowledge. Education has always belonged to the category primarily of the development of the spirit, and from spirituality it takes its roots. Let us remember that it was with the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine in 988 that the development of schools began in our lands, while the first educational institutions were hosted by churches and monasteries,” the metropolitan wrote on Facebook.

He added that in order to become a worthy person, knowledge alone is not enough – people need to grow spiritually, find moral guidelines and values, and learn goodness and justice.

Our Lord Jesus Christ “taught and preached” during His earthly journey (Matt. 11: 1). But He taught not some temporary sciences, but another, wider science – love, from which everything grows and everything comes,” said the head of the OCU.

According to Metropolitan Epifaniy, modern-day teachers, raising the younger generation, should share not only knowledge but also life wisdom, helping them in finding their place in the world, establishing in students’ souls spiritual guidelines that will lead them to the Truth. “And good works must be taught not only in words, but also in deeds, as the Savior did: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” (John 13:15).

“I wish every schoolchild and student this academic year that you not only replenish the coffers of knowledge, but also grow spiritually – thanks to your own hard work and worthy mentors. And I wish you, teachers, strength and inspiration in your difficult and responsible work. May the Lord bless you!” Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine concluded.
