Since Russia launched a military invasion into Ukraine on Feb. 24, headlines around the world have focused on the atrocities of the war and its negative effects on international relations. However, decades-long theological conflict behind the war has been underreported.

Λίγοι, ή ίσως και κανένας, θα έφταναν στο σημείο να ισχυριστούν ότι ο Πατριάρχης Κύριλλος, ως επικεφαλής της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας της Ρωσίας (ή «πασών των Ρωσιών», όπως θέλει να λέει), θα μπορούσε να κατηγορηθεί για εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας ή για εγκλήματα πολέμου, επειδή δεν απέτρεψε την απροειδοποίητη και αδικαιολόγητη στρατιωτική επίθεση που έχει κοστίσει αρκετές αθώες ζωές τις τελευταίες μόλις ημέρες. Την ίδια στιγμή, πολλοί, αν όχι οι περισσότεροι, θα συμφωνούσαν ότι ο Πρόεδρος Πούτιν πρέπει να λογοδοτήσει για τέτοιες φρικαλεότητες.
This evening, Sunday February 27th, 2022, His Excellency Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, communicated by telephone with His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and described the prevailing situation in his country after the military invasion by the Russian Federation. President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the manifestations of support on the part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate toward his troubled nation, imploring Him to intensify His prayers for the struggle of the Ukrainian people for the protection of their freedom and their homeland’s territorial integrity.

Νέα έκκληση να τερματιστεί αμέσως ο πόλεμος και κάθε πράξη βίας στην Ουκρανία απηύθυνε ο Παναγιώτατος Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίος στην ομιλία του, σήμερα, Κυριακή των Απόκρεω, 27 Φεβρουαρίου 2022, μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία κατά την οποία χοροστάτησε στον προσφάτως πανηγυρίσαντα Ιερό Ναό του Αγίου Χαραλάμπους της Κοινότητος Βεβεκίου. Ο Παναγιώτατος επεσήμανε ότι τα τελευταία εικοσιτετράωρα εκτυλίσσεται μία τραγική ανθρωπιστική καταστροφή στην Ουκρανία και εξέφρασε την συμπαράστασή του προς τις οικογένειες όλων των θυμάτων και των τραυματιών.
