One week from today, on February 17, the University of Chicago (Divinity School), Fordham University's Orthodox Christian Studies Center, and the Lumen Christi Institute will cohost “For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church.” A panel of leading Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant theologians will examine and discuss this recent social document and its application to the wider Christian world.

The 20th anniversary of the European Ecumenical Charter, known as the “Charta Oecumenica”, will be marked by European Churches on 22 April 2021. The document was signed in 2001 by the presidents of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) and Conference of European Churches (CEC) to promote closer collaboration and ecumenical dialogue in Europe.

Much Catholic media attention has focused upon the final document of the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazonian Region, with its newsworthy recommendations about the possible ordination of married men and reopening the conversation of ordaining women as deacons (and, incidentally, ignoring many of the other substantive sections in the document about cultural, ecological, and ecclesial conversion to a greater living out of the Gospel in the region…). Everyone wonders what Pope Francis will do with the synod’s recommendations, as we anxiously await his post-synodal apostolic exhortation.
