This vital new legislation is designed to counter Russia's violations of religious freedom in the Crimea and Donbas regions of Ukraine, where the Moscow Patriarchate has many times acted against the rights of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine. The Ukraine Religious Freedom Support Act will help enable concrete efforts to protect the religious freedom and other basic human rights of Orthodox Christians in Ukraine who have freely embraced the Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine, which was created in December 2018 by the unity council that elected His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine. His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew granted the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Church in Ukraine on January 5, 2019.
