Messages of peace from His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, who was in his birthplace and prayed in the Holy Metropolitan Church of Saint Minas for the Orthodox people.

"My heart aches when people are killed and buildings are demolished in Ukraine", said the patriarch, who turned back time to when he himself was in Odessa from Spili in 1985, where he remained for 10 years.

"In front of Saint Minas, my prayer is “Grant, O Lord, peace to these Orthodox peoples. "No more bloodshed," said the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, who from Heraklion made special reference to the large area donated by Egyptian President Al Sisi to the Patriarchate in the new Administrative Capital of Egypt, which is emerging from the desert. and which is the newest capital of the world.

The Patriarchate now acquires its own space, as a church and a multicultural area will be built which will embrace all people, which His Beatitude dedicates as he said, to his three homelands, Greece, Egypt and Cyprus.

This is a huge area in Cairo, which will be the new center of Orthodoxy, while it will be a beacon for the missionary work of the Patriarchate on the long-suffering continent.

From the beginning, the WCC has called for an immediate end to armed hostilities, to stop the war and has appealed also for an immediate end to indiscriminate attacks with an escalating impact on civilians in Ukraine. While in Chernihiv on April 10, the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epifaniy, addressed the faithful with a sermon on the topic of war. He noted that the Russicsts are preparing for the Ukrainians the same fate and torture, which they subjected them to in Bucha and Mariupol, but the Ukrainians will definitely win because God is on their side.

THE former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Williams has backed calls for the Russian Orthodox Church to be excluded from the World Council of Churches (WCC), as Patriarch Kirill of Moscow praised his country’s armed forces for acting in line with the gospel and Christian teaching.

Elder Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon described as “deadly” the neutral stance taken by the Russian Church in the face of what is happening in Ukraine.

“I would say that the silence of the Patriarch of Moscow is outrageous. I believe that he sees reality, but he may not be free to speak and say what he thinks and that any reasonable person could express an opinion about,” he said, among other things, in the interview he gave to the television station of Thessaly, TRT.

Ukrainian scholar and priest Cyril Hovorun explains how Orthodoxy is shaping politics and political theology in Russia and Eastern Europe. As an insider to church politics and a scholar of contemporary Orthodoxy, 

Cyril Hovorun outlines forms of political orthodoxy that have emerged from processes of secularisation and the rise of nation states. Developing in the shadow of Western political thought and theology, Orthodox political theologies grappled with the tensions inherent to their own political contexts. These tensions often stemmed from its relationship with and commitment to national identity and (the Russian) empire. Historically, Orthodoxy has charted a dichotomy between national identity and empire, but pursued different centres of gravity in which national identity developed in contrast with empire. 

Hovorun draws a picture of religion being politicised, and in that political space being vulnerable to nationalism, antisemitism, and historically fascism as well. Does this vulnerability stem from its politicisation and even weaponisation, or is it inherent to a religion invested in culture, politics and the common good? What is the relationship between national and transnational spaces of Orthodox identity-making? And how does this analysis relate to more recent developments, such as in Georgia in 2008 and in Ukraine since 2014? Roundtable The lecture is followed by a roundtable with Katharina Kunter, Petr Kratochvil, Jenny Leith and Marietta van der Tol.

 The roundtable will discuss how the use of Orthodoxy in the Russo-Ukrainian war is contested among Christian and other religious communities in Russia and Eastern Europe, how resistance is taking shape within the Russian-Orthodox Church and what local religious communities can do. This public lecture is offered as part of the conference "Christian identity in national, transnational and local space: perspectives from Protestantism, Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism", organised by the Blavatnik School of Government, 4-5 April 2022.
