It
has come to our attention that the venerable Patriarchate of Alexandria, after
due consideration, has decided to reinstitute the ancient order of deaconess, in
order to better serve the pastoral needs of the ever-increasing number of
missionary parishes within the Patriarchate which serves the entire continent
of Africa. The validity of this decision, however, has been questioned by some.
A consultation with the theme “Ecumenical Perspective on the Role of Women in the Churches” brought together 28 women and men to the Monastero di Bose in northern Italy from 3-7 October.

The headline from the official news agency of the Romanian
Patriarchate read, “Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria performs first
consecration of deaconesses.”
History was made on February 17, 2017 when five women were
consecrated deaconesses in the Orthodox Church. For many of us, this is a
welcome but shocking development.

Pope Francis’s recent call for a commission to explore the
possibility of reinstating the female diaconate in the Catholic Church
resonates with over a century of similar calls among leaders and laity
of the Orthodox Church.
