Metropolitan Athenagoras represented CROCEU at the EU High-Level Meeting with Religious Leaders on the European Way of Living
Opening the event, Vice-President Margaritis Schinas remarked that, although it did take a while for this dialogue to be initiated under the new EC, this meeting is just a new beginning for a much closer and hopefully regular dialogue with religious actors across the continent, which is evermore necessary in such difficult periods like the one we are currently finding ourselves in. Noting with gratitude the huge contribution of religious communities in overcoming the multisided effects of the pandemic, Schinas more than once asked the religious leaders present to continue their efforts in this direction.
On the same tone, European Parliament Vice-President Roberta Metsola pointed to the fact that the contribution of religious communities to societies has always been very significant, and only became more visible in the context of the pandemic.
The Orthodox Church was represented at the meeting by His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate), who spoke on behalf of CROCEU. In his intervention, the metropolitan showed that the ongoing pandemic has had a tremendous impact on religious life throughout Europe. “Decision makers should constantly take note of the fact that religious experience as such is a first and foremost communitarian experience, and it plays a huge role in ensuring the wellbeing of our societies. In light of this, I think we need to emphasise the need for a deeper debate in order to achieve a right balance between protective measures and fundamental human rights, not least the right to freedom of religion”, Metropolitan Athenagoras said. Further on, he pointed to education – and more specifically, Religious Education – as a most efficient tool to prevent radicalisation and terrorism, also suggesting the EC to revive the financing of exchange programs which would allow young Europeans to better know each other, in their religious and cultural identity. Finally, on the issue of migration, Metropolitan Athenagoras pleaded for a balanced approach, that would be faithful to the Gospel, while at once denouncing and fighting against structural evil, such as human trafficking, an activity which is unfortunately flourishing in the harsh context of the dislocation of populations in the vicinity of the EU and beyond. “We also need to help the new comers to integrate in their new countries, to learn the local language and contribute to social lives. The worst thing that could happen is for them to end up living in ghettos. We need to avoid this at all costs, for this too often leads precisely to radicalisation and terrorism”, he concluded.
The high-level meeting with religious leaders in Europe represents the yearly highlight of the open, transparent and regular dialogue between EU institutions and religious communities. Since 2009, this dialogue has also been enshrined into the very Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (Art. 17). Other more focused gathering take place throughout the year, at the level of experts in the field under consideration. On those occasions, religious representatives get a chance to have their say into the burning issues the EU institutions are currently dealing with.

Ὁ Μητροπολίτης Βελγίου κ. Ἀθηναγόρας ἐξεπροσώπησε τὴν CROCEU στὴν Συνάντηση ὑψηλοῦ ἐπιπέδου τῆς ΕΕ μὲ θρησκευτικοὺς ἡγέτες μὲ θέμα: Ὁ Εὐρωπαϊκὸς τρόπος ζωῆς
Τὴν Παρασκευὴ 27η
Νοεμβρίου 2020 πραγματοποιήθηκε σὲ διαδικτυακὴ μορφὴ ἡ 15η Συνάντηση
ὑψηλοῦ ἐπιπέδου μὲ θρησκευτικοὺς ἡγέτες. Αὐτὴ ἡ ἐτήσια Συνάντηση
ἀφιερώθηκε στὸν εὐρωπαϊκὸ τρόπο ζωῆς, εἰδικὰ ὑπὸ τὸ φῶς τῶν πιεστικῶν
προκλήσεων τῆς πανδημίας τοῦ κορωνοϊοῦ, τῶν τρομοκρατικῶν ἀπειλῶν καὶ
τῆς μετανάστευσης. Πρόκειται γιὰ τὴν πρώτη τοιούτου εἴδους Συνάντηση ποὺ
φιλοξενήθηκε ἀπὸ τὸν Ἀντιπρόεδρο τοῦ Εὐρωπαϊκοῦ Κοινοβουλίου κ.
Μαργαρίτη Σχοινᾶ. Στὴν Συνάντηση ἦταν παροῦσα ἐπίσης ἡ κυρία Roberta
Metsola, Ἀντιπρόεδρος τοῦ Εὐρωπαϊκοῦ Κοινοβουλίου, ποὺ διορίστηκε μόλις
πρὸ μιᾶς ἑβδομάδας ὡς ὑπεύθυνη τοῦ Εὐρωπαϊκοῦ Κοινοβουλίου γιὰ τὸν
Διάλογο μὲ θρησκευτικοὺς φορεῖς στὴν ΕΕ. Ἡ ᾽Επιτροπὴ τῶν Ἀντιπροσώπων
τῶν Ὀρθοδόξων Ἐκκλησιῶν στὴν Εὐρωπαϊκὴ Ἕνωση (CROCEU) ἐκπροσωπήθηκε ἀπὸ
τὸν Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Βελγίου κ. Ἀθηναγόρα (Οἰκουμενικὸ
Πατριαρχεῖο).
Στὴν ἀρχὴ τῆς Συναντήσεως αὐτῆς ὁ Ἀντιπρόεδρος κ. Μαργαρίτης Σχοινᾶς ἀνέφερε, ὅτι αὐτὴ ἡ Συνάντηση-Διάλογος εἶναι μία νέα ἀρχὴ στὸ πλαίσιο τοῦ νέου Εὐρωπαϊκοῦ Κοινοβουλίου γιὰ ἕναν πιὸ στενὸ καὶ ἐλπίζουμε πιὸ τακτικὸ Διάλογο μὲ θρησκευτικοὺς φορεῖς σὲ ὁλόκληρη τὴν εὐρωπαϊκὴ ἥπειρο, ποὺ εἶναι ἀπαραίτητος σὲ τόσο δύσκολη περίοδο ὅπως αὐτὴ ποὺ διανύουμε σήμερα. Σημειώνοντας μὲ εὐγνωμοσύνη τὴν τεράστια συμβολὴ τῶν θρησκευτικῶν κοινοτήτων στὴν ὑπερνίκηση τῶν πολύπλευρων ἐπιπτώσεων τῆς πανδημίας, ὁ κύριος Σχοινᾶς παρεκάλεσε περισσότερες φορὲς τοὺς θρησκευτικοὺς ἡγέτες ποὺ ἦταν παρόντες, νὰ συνεχίσουν τὶς προσπάθειές τους πρὸς αὐτὴ τὴν κατεύθυνση.
Στὸν ἴδιο τόνο, ἡ Ἀντιπρόεδρος τοῦ Εὐρωπαϊκοῦ Κοινοβουλίου κυρία Roberta Metsola ἐπεσήμανε τὸ γεγονὸς ὅτι ἡ συμβολὴ τῶν θρησκευτικῶν κοινοτήτων στὴν κοινωνία ἦταν πάντοτε πολὺ σημαντικὴ καὶ ἔγινε πιὸ ὁρατὴ περισσότερο στὸ πλαίσιο τῆς πανδημίας.
Τὴν Ὀρθόδοξη Ἐκκλησία στὴν Συνάντηση αὐτὴ ἐξεπροσώπησε ὁ Σεβασμιώτατος Μητροπολίτης Βελγίου κ. Ἀθηναγόρας (Οἰκουμενικὸ Πατριαρχεῖο), ὁ ὁποῖος ὡμίλησε ἐξ ὀνόματος τῆς CROCEU. Στὴν παρέμβασή του ὁ Μητροπολίτης κ. Ἀθηναγόρας ἀνέφερε, ὅτι ἡ συνεχιζόμενη πανδημία ἔχει πολὺ ἀρνητικὸ ἀντίκτυπο στὴν λατρευτικὴ ζωὴ σὲ ὅλη τὴν Εὐρώπη. «Οἱ ὑπεύθυνοι ποὺ λαμβάνουν ἀποφάσεις θὰ πρέπει νὰ λαμβάνουν συνεχῶς ὑπ᾽ ὄψη τους τὸ γεγονὸς ὅτι ἡ λατρευτικὴ ἐμπειρία εἶναι μία πρώτη καὶ σημαντικὴ ἐμπειρία ποὺ διαδραματίζει τεράστιο ρόλο στὴν διασφάλιση τῆς εὐημερίας τῶν κοινωνιῶν μας. Ὑπὸ τὸ πρίσμα αὐτὸ νομίζω ὅτι πρέπει νὰ τονίσουμε τὴν ἀνάγκη γιὰ μιὰ βαθύτερη συζήτηση, προκειμένου νὰ ἐπιτευχθῇ μία σωστὴ ἰσορροπία μεταξὺ τῶν προστατευτικῶν μέτρων καὶ τῶν θεμελιωδῶν ἀνθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, ἰδίως τοῦ δικαιώματος τῆς θρησκευτικῆς ἐλευθερίας». Στὴν συνέχεια ἀναφέρθηκε στὴν ἐκπαίδευση – καὶ ἰδιαιτέρως στὴν θρησκευτικὴ ἐκπαίδευση – ὡς τὸ πιὸ ἀποτελεσματικὸ ἐργαλεῖο γιὰ τὴν πρόληψη τοῦ φανατισμοῦ καὶ τῆς τρομοκρατίας. Προέτεινε μάλιστα στὸ Εὐρωπαϊκὸ Κοινοβούλιο τὴν ἐπανασύσταση τῆς χρηματοδότησης προγραμμάτων ἀνταλλαγῆς ποὺ θὰ ἐπιτρέπουν στοὺς νέους νὰ γνωρίσουν καλύτερα ὁ ἕνας τὸν ἄλλον στὴν θρησκευτικὴ καὶ πολιτιστική τους παράδοση. Τέλος γιὰ τὸ θέμα τῆς μετανάστευσης, ὁ Μητροπολίτης κ. Ἀθηναγόρας πρότεινε μία ἰσορροπημένη προέγγιση, ποὺ θὰ ἦταν ἐναρμονισμένη μὲ τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο. Ἐνῶ ἀπὸ τὴ μιὰ μεριὰ ἡ ΕΕ καταγγέλει καὶ καταπολεμᾶ τὸ διαρθρωμένο κακό, ἀπὸ τὴν ἄλλη μεριὰ ὑφίσταται ἡ ἐμπορία ἀνθρώπων, μία δραστηριότητα ποὺ δυστυχῶς εὐδοκιμεῖ πολὺ ἄσχημα, μὲ τὴν μετεγκατάσταση πληθυσμών κοντὰ στὴν Εὐρωπαϊκὴ Ἕνωση καὶ πέραν αὐτῆς. «Πρέπει ἐπίσης νὰ βοηθήσουμε τοὺς νεοεισερχόμενους νὰ ἐνσωματωθοῦν στὶς νέες χῶρες τους, νὰ μάθουν τὴν τοπικὴ γλῶσσα καὶ νὰ συμβάλουν στὴν κοινωνικὴ ζωή. Τὸ χειρότερο ποὺ θὰ μποροῦσε νὰ συμβῇ εἶναι νὰ καταλήξουν νὰ ζοῦν σὲ γκέτο. Πρέπει νὰ τὸ ἀποφύγουμε μὲ κάθε κόστος, διότι πολὺ συχνὰ ὁδηγεῖ ἀκριβῶς στὸν φανατισμὸ καὶ τὴν τρομοκρατία» κατέληξε.
Ἡ Συνάντηση ὑψηλοῦ ἐπιπέδου μὲ θρησκευτικοὺς ἡγέτες στὴν Εὐρώπη ἀντιπροσωπεύει τὸ ἐτήσιο ἀποκορύφωμα τοῦ ἀνοικτοῦ, διαφανοῦς καὶ τακτικοῦ Διαλόγου μεταξὺ θεσμικῶν ὀργάνων τῆς ΕΕ καὶ θρησκευτικῶν κοινοτήτων. Ἀπὸ τὸ 2009, αὐτὸς ὁ Διάλογος θεσμοθετήθηκε στὴν ἴδια Συνθήκη γιὰ τὴν λειτουργία τῆς ΕΕ (ἄρθρο 17). Πραγματοποιοῦνται καὶ ἄλλες ἐπὶ μέρους συναντήσεις ὅλο τὸ χρόνο, σὲ ἐπίπεδο ἐμπειρογνωμόνων τοῦ ὑπὸ ἐξέταση τομέα. Σὲ αὐτὲς τὶς περιπτώσεις οἱ θρησκευτικοὶ ἐκπρόσωποι ἔχουν τὴν εὐκαιρία νὰ ἐκφράσουν τὴ γνώμη τους γιὰ τὰ καίρια ζητήματα ποὺ ἀντιμετωπίζουν τὰ θεσμικὰ ὄργανα τῆς ΕΕ.
