GERMANY’S ORTHODOX BISHOPS ARE PLANNING TO MARK 1700 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST ECUMENICAL COUNCIL IN 2025

 Romanian Patriarchate

German Orthodox Christians will celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council in 2025. The decision to mark the historical event in Nicaea was made at the last meeting of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of Germany (OBKD) that took place in October in Bonn.

The program of events will most likely be set at OBKD’s meeting next year in Cologne.

During the October 9 meeting, chaired by His Eminence Metropolitan Augustinos of Germany, Exarch of Central Europe (Ecumenical Patriarchate), aspects of the religious life of communities during the coronavirus pandemic were discussed.

The personality of Father Mircea Basarab, a prominent representative of the Romanian diaspora in Germany, was evoked, and commissions presented various activity reports.

The delegate of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the meeting was Fr. Cătălin Preda from Bonn Parish.

First Council of Nicaea

The First Ecumenical Council, the first assembly of bishops in the whole Church, has remained in history as a model for the adoption of significant decisions concerning the right faith and unity of the Church.

At this Council, the heresies of the time were fought, including the wrong teachings of Arius. Also, the Council formulated the first articles of the Symbol of Faith (Creed).

The Council took place in 325, in the city of Nicaea and was convened by the Holy Emperor Constantine the Great.
