Following a long-standing tradition, a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople is in Rome this week to help build unity between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

The year 2025 will mark the 1700th anniversary of the first ecumenical council, the council of Nicaea (325), which initiated a new chapter in the history of Christianity. On this occasion, the World Council of Churches is planning to organize a World Conference of the Faith and Order Commission in order to celebrate this anniversary and to reflect on the transmission of the apostolic faith today. The purpose of this conference will not be to study the history of the council nor to study its theology, but rather to reflect on what “visible unity” means today to different Christian Churches and how Christians can collectively promote, preach and live the apostolic faith today in the context of so many contemporary challenges, such as secularization and religious pluralism.

The pandemic of coronavirus that has shaken the world for the last nine months has revealed different forms of fanaticism. First of all, it has revealed coronavirus sceptics. Often referring to all sorts of conspiracy theories, they generally reject the discourse of science. Referring to human rights, their attitude is rather individual than collective, since they think more about their selfish freedom than the wellbeing of the society. They reject the health restrictions imposed by the civil authorities in order to protect the population, such as wearing mandatory face coverings, and they contest the need of mass vaccinations. In different parts of the world, we have seen during the past months several public demonstrations held by such coronavirus sceptics.
