Λίγοι, ή ίσως και κανένας, θα έφταναν στο σημείο να ισχυριστούν ότι ο Πατριάρχης Κύριλλος, ως επικεφαλής της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας της Ρωσίας (ή «πασών των Ρωσιών», όπως θέλει να λέει), θα μπορούσε να κατηγορηθεί για εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας ή για εγκλήματα πολέμου, επειδή δεν απέτρεψε την απροειδοποίητη και αδικαιολόγητη στρατιωτική επίθεση που έχει κοστίσει αρκετές αθώες ζωές τις τελευταίες μόλις ημέρες. Την ίδια στιγμή, πολλοί, αν όχι οι περισσότεροι, θα συμφωνούσαν ότι ο Πρόεδρος Πούτιν πρέπει να λογοδοτήσει για τέτοιες φρικαλεότητες.

I’ve always admired the early monks and nuns of the desert literature. Not because they discovered ways of escaping the reality of paying taxes. Not only because their words were inspirational and their prayer transformative. And not primarily because they withstood the power of the empire and the test of time. But because they prevail as symbols of an alternative course of action. While their ideal is often mythologized or romanticized, even manipulated and exploited in many church circles, it nevertheless remains an image of the value of silence. Of doing less or doing nothing. Of wordlessness and inconspicuousness. Of praying instead of producing. Quite simply: of being.

 The sacrament of ordination, and its control of and impact on clergy and laity, have been on the radar of the Church and on my mind of late, especially with the elections of a number of bishops worldwide and the surrounding debates about hierarchy, jurisdiction, and authority. However, the theology of ordination has frequently become so convoluted and clouded— by mysticism, misinterpretation, and even sometimes malevolence—that it invariably distorts any meaningful conversation about priesthood, power, and primacy in the Church.

On his recent visit to Mt. Athos in October, 2019, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew announced the imminent inclusion of five Athonite elders among the saints: Ieronymos of Simonopetra, Daniel of Katounakia, Joseph the Hesychast, Ephraim of Katounakia, and Sophrony of Essex.
