“THE HOLY AND GREAT COUNCIL OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH (JUNE 2016)

 The Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church was held at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Greece, from June 19 to 26, 2016. It was unquestionably the most important gathering of heads and hierarchs of the Orthodox Church since many centuries, but controversies prior to the council and subsequently, and the absence of four local (or national) Orthodox churches from the council cast a long shadow over its significance. This article presents an overview of councils in Orthodoxy, preparations for the council, the impact of ecclesial and  political issues on the council, the unfolding of the council, and assessments of the council.
Councils in the Orthodox Tradition
Since the beginnings of Christianity, councils bringing together the leaders of the Church have been the principal means for resolving urgent issues affecting the Church, including matters of faith (dogmatic or doctrinal questions), Church organisation and discipline and pastoral questions. The first council, known as the Council of Jerusalem, was held about the year 50 (Acts 15:2-35). It brought together the principal apostles to deal with the issue of whether or not converts...
