‘WHAT HAS CLIMATE CHANGE TO DO WITH ORTHODOXY? A CONVERSATION ABOUT CHRISTIAN WITNESS IN A WARMING WORLD’

Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies,

This IOCS Conversation Day will take place by Zoom on 17 November 2021, 18.30-20.00 GMT

By mid-November, we should know what commitments have been made by world leaders gathered at COP26. So it will be time for the rest of us to consider what this means for our everyday lives, our aspirations, the decisions we make as citizens. The theological underpinnings of Orthodox concern for the natural environment are by now well-known, and we will not rehearse them again. Instead, our panellists will initiate a conversation about what it means in practice to live out that theology today.

The panel for the day will consist of:

Mr Costa Carras: Council member and past Vice-President of Europa Nostra. Organiser (on behalf of Elliniki Etairia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate), 1988 Patmos Conference on ‘Religion and the Environment’

Ms Spyridoula Fotinis: Graduate student in Public Policy, University of Helsinki. Former programmes coordinator (2019-21), Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

Dr Edward Skidelsky: Lecturer in Philosophy, University of Exeter. Co-author (with Robert Skidelsky) of How Much is Enough? Work, Money and the Good Life (2012)

Sister Theochariti: Nun of the Monastery of Chrysopigi, Chania, Crete (see further http://www.imx.gr/orthodox_tradition.html)

Dr Elizabeth Theokritoff (Associate Lecturer IOCS) will act as moderator for the event.

The panel conversation will be followed by a Q&A session with the participants. If you plan to participate and have a question to submit in advance, please do so (by email to info@iocs.cam.ac.uk). This will allow us to make best use of time during the event.

All are welcome to attend.
