ARCHBISHOP OF AUSTRALIA, MAKARIOS : ON BECOMING DISTANT FROM GOD

Greek-English
Archbishop of Australia, Makarios –
On becoming distant from God

Not much effort is required for someone to realise that becoming distant from God and having personal autonomy, not only fails to deliver joy and internal fulfilment to people, but also limits and crushes their own lives in a depressing fashion.

This is why someone who has become autonomous and egotistical, someone who has made a god of themselves and worships themselves, ends up living without freedom. The things they enjoy become painful. Their pleasures end up in suffering. Their joys become insipid. Their whole life is one of depression, without meaning or enthusiasm.

From the other aspect, a person of God is surrounded by the fullness of grace and all things for them occur easily, comfortably and freely. They are comfortable in being alone as well as being in society.
They enjoy silence, but they’re not however disturbed by noise. They happily speak with everyone, but don’t feel awkward being in an environment of silence.
They enjoy life, but are more comfortable with the idea of the death which leads to Life.

In cutting off their life from God, a person is automatically bound by their passions and desires. They become trapped in their own createdness and lose their freedom and the beauty of life.
Because the more we come to know God, the more we become actual people, and the more we are united with Him, the more we become “Gods through Grace” and so much more is man's alienated internal state of self determination, subject to a different law, destroyed.
From his book, "Lord and Master of my life."
