This program provides an in-depth education in Eastern Christian Studies. A student can choose to study for four semesters (two years) after which they receive a master’s (MTh) degree or to complete their studies after two semesters (one year) in which case they are awarded a magister’s degree. In the first year, students study method and theory in Eastern Christian Studies and the four sources of the Eastern Christian tradition: the Bible and other apostolic writings; the church fathers and their historical context; the Church’s liturgy and spirituality; the organisation of the Church and its internal and external relations. In the second year, students choose one of these subject areas to study in greater depth and, in addition, they also focus on one of the four Orthodox traditions: The Byzantine, the Coptic, the Syriac or the Ethio-Eritrean.  Students who choose to focus on the bible and apostolic scriptures study within the framework of biblical studies throughout the second year.

Requirements To be eligible to be admitted to the program, an applicant must either have a bachelor’s degree in theology/religious studies, comprising 180 ECTS credits or a degree in another subject as part of which they have taken a course in religious studies or other theological courses worth at least 60 credits, including a thesis worth at least 15 credits. Students with other relevant subjects or an equivalent foreign degree may be admitted on the basis of individual assessment and examination. Students may also be admitted to later parts of the program (61-120 ECTS credits) on the basis of a special application, provided that the relevant prerequisites are met. Students from outside Sweden, or students who cannot verify proficiency in English, are required to take an internationally recognized test, e. g. TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent.
Cost of Study Students at Stockholm School of Theology are not required to pay tuition fees if they are citizens of Sweden of another EU country or if they have been granted permission to live in Sweden. However, all students registered for academic programs are required to pay a student union fee, which is 150 SEK per term for oncampus students.
