The Ukrainian World Congress
expresses sincerest gratitude to His Beatitude Ieronymos II, Archbishop
of Athens and All Greece, and all hierarchs who supported recognition
of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine during a Holy Synod held in Athens on
October 12, 2019.
The Church of Greece, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the
world and the state Church of Greece, became the first to recognize the
independence and sovereignty of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
Formal recognition will take place in Thessaloniki on October 19,
2019, with the participation of Archbishop Ieronymos and Orthodox Church
of Ukraine Metropolitan Epifaniy.
As RISU informed,
at an extraordinary meeting on October 12, the Council of the Greek
Orthodox Church recognized the autocephaly of the OCU. The decision was
adopted under the chairmanship of the Head of the Council and the
Primate of the Church of Greece, His Beatitude Archbishop Hieronymus.
This is a historic decision for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. One of
the largest Orthodox Churches in the world has officially confirmed the
legality of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's actions to grant
autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
