CHRISTIAN ORTHODOX THEOLOGY IN THE 21ST CENTURY – CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES

The School of Theology of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is organizing an International Conference in Athens from 4th – 10th May 2020 with the topic:

“Christian Orthodox Theology in the 21st century – Challenges and perspectives”

Under the aegis of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece

The Conference is included in the series of the International Theological Conferences of the 20th century that took place in the 20th century (in 1936 and 1976), and it’s aim is to highlight, examine and contrib-ute to the vital issues and problems preoccupying Orthodox Theology on a pan-Orthodox level during the 21st century.

In particular, the Conference will examine the position and mission of Orthodox Theology and the Church in the new historical, geopolitical, social and cultural conditions in order to fulfill anew its rich legacy, its real ministration, its prophetic testimony and function in the modern world.

The individual themes that will concern the Conference have to do with the study and critical positioning vis-à-vis the relation of Orthodox Theology first and foremost to the Church, the university and society, but also to its dialogue with the sciences, technology, culture and subsequently, to the contemporary theological and spiritual trends.

The inaugural address of the Conference will be delivered by His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew. Members of the Theological Faculties of Athens and Thessaloniki, Orthodox academic Theologians, as well as eminent ecclesiastical personalities from Greece and abroad will be invited to the Conference, in an attempt to represent, if possible, all the local Orthodox Churches and the so-called Diaspora, scholars from other cognitive fields and people of art and culture, whereas theological personalities of international prestige from other Christian Churches and denominations will be invited to attend as observers.

The opening ceremony of the Conference will be held in the historic main building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on 4th May, while its main proceedings will take place at the National Library on the premises of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). During the Conference there will be eight (8) theological workshops, as well as parallel events, such as taking the foreign participants on a conducted tour of the Acropolis and Pnyka, Byzantine walks in Athens, visits to the Acropolis Museum, the National and Archaeological Museum, the Athens Byzantine and Christian Museum, theological book exhibitions (in Greek and foreign languages), musical and artistic happenings, etc. According to the program prepared by the scientific and organizational committee, there will be a visit to Delphi and the Monastery of Osios Loukas for all the speakers and participants of the Conference on Thursday, May 7th in order to become acquainted first-hand the classical and Greek Orthodox cultural heritage, but also the local Church.

Η Θεολογική Σχολή του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (Ε.Κ.Π.Α.) διοργανώνει Διεθνές Συνέδριο στην Αθήνα από τις 4 έως τις 10 Μαΐου 2020 με θέμα:

«Η Ορθόδοξη Θεολογία στον 21ο αιώνα. Προκλήσεις και προοπτικές»

Υπό την αιγίδα της Ιεράς Συνόδου της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος

Το Συνέδριο εντάσσεται στη σειρά των Διεθνών Θεολογικών Συνεδρίων που πραγματοποιήθηκαν στην Αθήνα κατά τον 20ό αιώνα (1936 και 1976) και στοχεύει στην ανάδειξη, διερεύνηση και συμβολή στα καίρια ζητήματα και προβλήματα που απασχολούν την Ορθόδοξη Θεολογία σε πανορθόδοξο επίπεδο κατά τον 21ο αιώνα. Ειδικότερα, το Συνέδριο θα εξετάσει τη θέση και την αποστολή της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας και Θεολογίας στις νέες ιστορικές, γεωπολιτικές, κοινωνικές και πολιτισμικές συνθήκες, προκειμένου να εκφράσει εκ νέου την πλούσια κληρονομιά, την έμπρακτη διακονία, την προφητική μαρτυρία και λειτουργία της στον σύγχρονο κόσμο. Οι ιδιαίτερες θεματικές που θα απασχολήσουν το Συνέδριο αφορούν στη σπουδή και στην κριτική τοποθέτηση απέναντι στη σχέση της Ορθόδοξης Θεολογίας πρώτιστα με την Εκκλησία, με το πανεπιστήμιο και με την κοινωνία, καθώς επίσης και στον διάλογό της με τις επιστήμες, την τεχνολογία, τον πολιτισμό και, ακολούθως, με τα σύγχρονα θεολογικά και πνευματικά ρεύματα.

Τις εργασίες του Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου «Η Θεολογία στον 21ο αιώνα. Προκλήσεις και Προοπτικές» θα τιμήσει με την παρουσία του η Α.Θ.Π. ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ. Βαρθολομαίος Α΄, ο οποίος θα εκφωνήσει και την εναρκτήρια ομιλία του Συνεδρίου. Στο Συνέδριο έχουν προσκληθεί και θα συμμετέχουν μέλη του Διδακτικού και Ερευνητικού Προσωπικού των Θεολογικών Σχολών Αθηνών και Θεσσαλονίκης, Ορθόδοξοι ακαδημαϊκοί Θεολόγοι και διακεκριμένες εκκλησιαστικές προσωπικότητες από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό (Ευρώπη, Αμερική, Αφρική, Ασία, Αυστραλία), εκπροσωπώντας, κατά το εφικτό, όλες τις κατά τόπους Ορθόδοξες Εκκλησίες και τη λεγόμενη Διασπορά, επιστήμονες από άλλα γνωστικά αντικείμενα και άνθρωποι της τέχνης και του πολιτισμού. Παράλληλα, ως παρατηρητές έχουν προσκληθεί και θα συμμετέχουν θεολογικές προσωπικότητες διεθνούς κύρους από άλλες χριστιανικές ομολογίες και παραδόσεις.

Η έναρξη του Συνεδρίου θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 4 Μαΐου 2020 στην Αίθουσα Τελετών στο ιστορικό Κεντρικό Κτήριο του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, ενώ οι κύριες εργασίες του θα διεξαχθούν στην Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη στους χώρους του Κέντρου Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα «Σταύρος Νιάρχος» (Κ.Π.Ι.Σ.Ν.).

Κατά τη διάρκεια του Συνεδρίου θα διοργανωθούν οκτώ (8) θεολογικά εργαστήρια, καθώς και παράλληλες εκδηλώσεις, όπως ξενάγηση των συνέδρων στην Ακρόπολη και την Πνύκα, βυζαντινοί περίπατοι στην Αθήνα, επισκέψεις στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης, στο Εθνικό και Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, στο Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο Αθηνών, εκθέσεις θεολογικού βιβλίου (ελληνόγλωσσου και ξενόγλωσσου), μουσικά και εικαστικά δρώμενα, καθώς και πλειάδα άλλων εκδηλώσεων. Την Πέμπτη 7 Μαΐου 2020 οι εισηγητές και οι σύνεδροι προγραμματίζεται να συμμετάσχουν σε εκπαιδευτική επίσκεψη στους Δελφούς και στην Ιερά Μονή Οσίου Λουκά, προκειμένου να γνωρίσουν εκ του σύνεγγυς την κλασική και ελληνορθόδοξη πολιτιστική κληρονομιά αλλά και την τοπική Εκκλησία.
