PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES IN ECCLESIOLOGY, SPRING 2021

Sankt Ignatios College, Stockholm School of Theology

Public lecture series in Ecclesiology, spring 2021

We are pleased to announce that this term we will hold a new series of public access lectures. In each of these lectures a member of our teaching staff speaks about a subject in which they have particular expertise in a way that non-specialists can readily understand. These lectures are a wonderful way to access the experience and knowledge of some of the leading scholars in Orthodox tradition and theology working today. This term, the theme of the series is ecclesiology, and will focus on the identity and purpose of the Church.

The Church is often the source of great pride and joy for Christians and the object of our love. It is in the church that our faith is nurtured and developed, and it is through the Church that we grow and learn as Christians. But what actually is the Church and what is it for? Even more importantly, does the Church today serve its God-given role within God’s world? What is the relation of the Church to politics, to culture and to issues such as justice, democracy and human rights. How should ministry be practiced in today’s Church and what is the relation between our conciliar structures and democracy? These are the questions which probe at our understanding of the nature and identity of the Church and allow us to critically reflect on its life today. In an attempt to answer such questions, each of our lecturers will examine a different facet of the life of the Church and bring that aspect under the scrutiny of their particular area of scholarly expertise.
